Getting started

There are many ways you can kick off your career in the transport and logistics sector.

One of the most positive steps you can take is to start the process of getting your driver licence.

Getting your full licence to drive while at school will give you the option of working towards other licence classes which could see you driving anything from a tourist bus to a big rig.

Another positive step is to do some research and find out about the industry sectors for yourself.

Some good tips include:

  • Visit some workplaces in the industry you are interested in
  • Take a weekend or holiday job where you can learn firsthand what could be involved
  • Visit some career or industry websites e.g. www.careers.govt.nz
  • Talk to your careers advisor or careers counsellor for advice
  • Talk to friends and family – they may have ideas or contacts who can help you
