Future options

Maybe your son or daughter has lost interest in studying and would rather get working.

Perhaps they are practically-minded and would rather be out and about driving vehicles/machinery than sitting in an office, or maybe they'd like a combination of both.

There are a number of careers out there for young people like this. There are qualifications for the road transport industry including warehousing and logistics, passenger services and ports and stevedores.

Many young people like working on their own driving vans, buses, or, later on, trucks; while others enjoy working as part of a team such as in a warehouse or logistics office. They may aspire to be a Road Transport Manager, a VIP Chauffeur, a Truck Driving Instructor, a Charter Operations Manager, an International Logistics Manager or Cargo Operations Manager.

How to help your son or daughter get started

If your son or daughter is interested in joining the road transport or logistics industry there are several things they could do while still at school. They could do the NCEA unit standards on core driving, if their school offers these.

They could get their full driver licence and maybe take part in a Gateway Programme, again if their school offers one. This programme gives students structured workplace learning, while they continue to study at school. As well as getting work experience, they might find a potential employer. Find out more by contacting the school's Gateway Advisor or Careers Councillor.

Modern Apprenticeships are an exciting and interesting way to get their career started. Your son or daughter can learn while they earn, with no student loan to worry about.
