Students - get your career moving

Want to find the right job and get your career moving in an exciting and rewarding direction? Enjoy the freedom of getting out and about or the variety of physical work combined with office work? Then, the transport industry could be for you.

If you hold a clean licence you could consider driving a courier van, a city bus, a forklift, and a truck a bit later on.

Perhaps working as part of a team in a warehouse or freight forwarding office may suit you better.

Maybe you would enjoy working at one of New Zealand's busy airports or wharves, starting off in warehousing or an office-based logistics job.

Whatever job you choose there are great opportunities to get started towards well paying and challenging careers where you can earn while you learn.

Start your transport or logistics career now

If you're interested in joining the road transport industry you could start by getting your driver licence (you need to be 15 years old), and also doing some NCEA unit standards such as defensive driving theory.

If your school has a Gateway Programme have you thought about getting some work experience and maybe even a potential start with an employer? Your Careers Councillor or Gateway Advisor at college can give you more information.

Getting some work experience now will show employers that you've learned the basics and are really keen to learn more about the road transport industry. This will give you a real advantage when you start looking for a job.

Cadetships in truck driving allow you to study for a national qualification with, or without a job, and you receive excellent support and tuition as well. You must have a full driver licence to apply. Cadetships are run at the polytechnics/institutes of technology in the Taranaki (WITT), Hawkes Bay (EIT), and Wellington (WelTec) region. More regions will be included in 2010.

Once you've got a job, you can talk to your employer about joining the Modern Apprenticeship programme.

Modern Apprenticeships are an exciting and interesting way to get your career started. Learn while you earn and have no student loan to worry about.

You can gain qualifications in the transport industry that will set you up for life.
