Modern Apprenticeships - information for students
Not many young people get the chance to earn while they learn but you have an amazing opportunity to do just that with the Modern Apprenticeship Programme.
Apprentices have the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications on the job, gaining experience, skills and knowledge from those working within the industry.
As a Modern Apprentice you will receive support from a Tranzqual mentor to help you succeed.
In the road transport and logistics industries young people can currently work towards three Modern Apprenticeships:
- Commercial road transport driver - truck driver (two years)
- Warehouse and distribution (three years)
- Freight forwarding.
There are no specific educational requirements for apprenticeships in these industries; however, basic language, literacy and numeracy skills are important. Most workers need to show initiative and commitment to their job. Being punctual, presentable and a team player also help.
To become a Modern Apprentice you need to:
- be between 16-21 years old (although older people looking to change careers may also qualify)
- have found work in the road transport and logistic industries
- be ready to work towards the National Certificate at level 3 and level 4.
The programme requires apprentices to sit regular assessments and complete training outside of the workplace when required.
Modern Apprenticeships usually take two or three years to complete and are undertaken on the job. The employer supports the apprentice over the duration of the programme.
Once you have completed your studies, you'll be awarded a National Certificate linked to New Zealand's Qualifications Framework.
An apprentice must negotiate his or her salary with their employer. There is a minimum wage an apprentice is entitled to.
