How the Qualification System Works

Tranzqual qualifications have been purpose-built to fit the needs of the various sectors of the industries we support.
Qualifications are made up of Unit Standards worth varying numbers of credits.

  • Credits reflect the relative time and effort required to achieve a Unit Standard. In general, one credit equals about 10 or 12 hours of learning, where the trainee has no prior knowledge of the subject
  • Each Unit Standard describes the specific knowledge and skills required by someone who is competent in the subject (e.g. Load and Unload a Goods Service Vehicle)
  • Some Unit Standards in a qualification will be compulsory and are skills that everyone in the industry needs to know (e.g. Core Driving Knowledge and Skills)
  • Optional Unit Standards offer an extension to the scope of the qualification (e.g. transport of flammable fuels)
  • Elective units, for more specialised skills, allow trainees and employers to customise a qualification to fit their own needs (e.g. transporting people with special needs)
  • Some qualifications also group additional optional Unit Standards together as a specialist ‘strand’ (e.g. driving a school bus)
  • All assessments for units are made by Assessors registered with Tranzqual ITO or by training providers who meet the NZ Qualifications Authority quality requirements. Assessment can be on-job or off-job
  • If you already have the knowledge and skills required for a Unit Standard you might be able to receive credit for it without further training under Recognition of Current Competency (RCC)

Documentation required

The National Qualifications System requires the completion of some documentation.

  • First you need to fill out a Training Agreement and Hook-On Form to register your details on the Framework. You will be issued with a personal ID number to ensure your Unit Standards and qualifications are correctly recorded against your name. You only need to Hook-On once. There is a $30.00 fee to cover registration, issue of the ID number and the annual provision (while you continue learning) of a Record of Learning (ROL) that shows what Unit Standards you have achieved to date. This fee is usually paid by the employer.
  • Next fill out a Training Schedule with your selected Unit Standards and send these two forms to Tranzqual ITO. Your Tranzqual ITO Regional Manager can help you with this.
