Levels, unit standards, credits, cross-credits and exemptions
| Q: |
I don't have any qualifications but I have been driving for more than five years. Can I get an exemption or do I have to be assessed to prove that I have the skills and knowledge required for Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications? |
|---|---|
| A: |
Firstly there are no exemptions as such for completing a national qualification. You can, however, use your skills and knowledge as evidence for assessment purposes. You will need to contact a training provider or assessor to discuss requirements and the possibility of undergoing a Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) assessment. Talk to Tranzqual or your training provider about the most appropriate approach to have your experience assessed. |
| Q: |
How can I check what unit standards and credits I have already got? |
| A: |
You can access your own record of learning directly from the NZQA web site using the secure "learner login" page. You will need to register first using your NZQA identification number. Once registered, you can access your record of achievement at any time. Otherwise you can contact Tranzqual or a training provider. You will need to provide your full name and date of birth and, if possible, your NZQA record of learning identification number.

| Q: |
I completed a National Certificate some years ago when I worked in another industry. Can the credits I got then count toward any of the road transport passenger service qualifications? |
| A: |
Yes. Any unit standard credits you have achieved can be cross-credited and count towards other national qualifications. You do not need to re-do those credits. Check with your training provider or Tranzqual for advice. For information about levels, unit standards and credits send an email to: industry.support@tranzqual.org.nz. |
| Q: |
I completed a certificate qualification before the introduction of unit standards. Can my achievements in getting this qualification count towards a road transport qualification? |
| A: |
Some aspects of your earlier achievement may be used as evidence towards a Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC) assessment. Contact Tranzqual or a training provider for more information and advice.

| A: |
Your knowledge and skills may meet some or all of the requirements for a national qualification. Your overseas qualification can also be evaluated for equivalency with a New Zealand qualification. Contact Tranzqual for assistance. |
Costs and subsidies
| Q: |
How much will it cost me to do a full National Certificate qualification? |
|---|---|
| A: |

| Q: |
Can I get funding from Tranzqual when I am re-assessed for a unit standard? |
| A: |
Tranzqual funding applies only for one assessment carried out against registered unit standards. Funding is not available when you are required to complete further assessment activities for any unit standards you have already been assessed against. Discuss your particular circumstances with your training provider. |
Training and assessment
| Q: |
Can the trainer my company employs provide the training and assessment I need for Tranzqual qualifications? |
|---|---|
| A: |
Your company's trainer may deliver the training but they can only assess the unit standards they are registered with Tranzqual to assess. An outside assessor can conduct the assessment if you prefer - note charges for assessment series may apply. Contact Tranzqual for more information about how your company can work directly with Tranzqual and receive a range of services to support training and assessment activities. |
| Q: |
Why are training agreements required? |
| A: |
A training agreement is required for all programmes for which funding can be provided. This is a requirement set down by Government as part of providing access to public funds for industry training. The training agreement must be signed by the employer and you, the trainee, and must identify the qualification/programme you are doing. |
| Q: |
Can my training provider or assessor assess all of the unit standards I require? |
| A: |
Often a training provider or assessor has approval to assess only certain unit standards. Contact your training provider, assessor or Tranzqual to discuss who can assess you.

| A: |

The NZQA also does regular audits of all training providers. If you have any concerns, contact Tranzqual. |
Record of achievement (ROA)
| Q: |
What is a record of achievement (ROA)? |
|---|---|
| A: |
A NZQA record of achievement (ROA), the new term for a Record of Learning or ROL, records all credits achieved over a person's lifetime, from the moment they are registered (or hooked on).The ROA is used by NZQA to validate entitlements to national qualifications. Everyone who completes assessments against unit standards for the purposes of completing a national qualification has the credits from those assessments registered with NZQA and placed on their record of achievement (ROA). Credits achieved in this way can count towards a national qualification and remain on your ROA for life. |
| Q: |
Why does my record of achievement (ROA) differ from the list of unit standards I have completed with my training provider? |
| A: |
It can take up to four weeks for assessment results to be reported to Tranzqual by your training provider or assessor and forwarded onto NZQA for registration on your record of achievement. Also, you might have been assessed by other training providers or assessors and these results may not be held by your current provider. |
Certificates and diplomas
| Q: |
How do I get my National Certificate or National Diploma now that I have completed my qualification? |
|---|---|
| A: |
Your training provider or assessor will usually apply to Tranzqual to get this for you. If this is not the case, contact Tranzqual for assistance. Note that there may be a fee charged for getting a National Certificate or National Diploma. Your training provider or assessor can tell you what the cost will be. |
| Q: |
How long will it take for my National Certificate or National Diploma to be issued by Tranzqual? |
| A: |
If you have all of the credits required to complete the qualification registered on your NZQA record of achievement (ROA) you should receive your certificate or diploma within three weeks of sending in your application to Tranzqual. Contact Tranzqual if you have any concerns. |
