FAQ's

I already hold a National Certificate (Commercial Road Transport) Goods Service. Do I have to do Level 2 and Level 3 certificates before I can do a Level 4 Goods Service qualification?

Answer - Possibly.  The qualification you hold covers many of the standards in the Goods Services suite of qualifications. However, you must be able to satisfy the prerequisite requirements of qualifications 1227 and 1228 before you can progress to the higher level. Discuss your needs with Tranzqual ITO or your training provider/assessor.

I don’t hold any qualifications but I have been driving for more than five years.  Do I have to re-learn the skills and knowledge required in Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications?

Answer - No.  You can use your skills and knowledge as evidence for exemption.  You will need to contact a training provider or assessor to discuss exemption requirements and Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC).  Note: the exemption does not grant you the qualification, and there will be no training agreement fee applicable to that qualification.

I completed a National Certificate some years ago when I worked in another industry.  Can the credits I did count toward any of the Road Transport Passenger Service qualifications?

Answer - Credits you hold for any of  unit standards can be cross-credited and count towards other certificates.  You would not need to re-do these credits.

How can I check what unit standards and credits I have already achieved?

Answer - Contact your nearest Tranzqual ITO Regional Manager or training provider.  You will need to provide your full name and date of birth and, if possible, your NZQA Record of Learning identification number.

How much will it cost me to do a full National Certificate qualification?

Answer - Costs will depend on the number of credits you require and how the training and assessment is delivered. You might be eligible for a Tranzqual ITO subsidy of up to 70% of the assessment cost. Contact your nearest Regional Manager or training provider.

How do I get started?

Answer - If you wish to obtain a Tranzqual ITO subsidy you must be “hooked on” to the NZQA framework, and sign a formal Training Agreement with your employer which needs to be registered with us.  Contact your nearest Regional Manager or training provider.

I have a road transport qualification from overseas.  Can this be used to demonstrate my skills and knowledge for a Tranzqual ITO administered qualification?

Answer - Your knowledge and skills may be used to meet exemption requirements.  Your overseas qualification can also be evaluated for equivalency with a New Zealand qualification.  Contact your nearest Regional Manager for assistance.

My company employs a trainer.  Can this person provide the training and assessment I need for the Goods Service suite of qualifications?

Answer - The trainer may deliver the training but unless they are registered with Tranzqual ITO as an assessor for the range of unit standards required in the Goods Service suite of qualifications, their assessments can not be recognised for qualification purposes. An outside assessor could be used to conduct the assessment if you wish. Contact your nearest Regional Manager for details.

Why are training agreements required?

Answer - A Training Agreement is required for all programmes for which an ITO subsidy can be provided to help you with the cost of training and/or assessment.  This is a requirement set down by Government as part of providing access to public funds for industry training.  The Training Agreement must be signed by the employer and the trainee and must identify the qualification/programme.

What is a Record of Learning?

Answer - Every person who undertakes assessments against standards for the purposes of completing a National Qualification is required to have an NZQA Record of Learning (ROL).  The ROL records all credits achieved over the person’s lifetime from the moment they are registered (or hooked on).The ROL is used by NZQA to validate entitlements to National Qualifications.

Why don’t I get subsidies for when I get re-assessed for some standards?

Answer - The ITO subsidies apply only for one assessment carried out against registered standards.  If you are required to do a re-assessment subsidies are not available.  Discuss your particular circumstances with your training provider or assessor.

How long will it take for my National Certificate or National Diploma to be issued by the ITO?

Answer - You should receive your Certificate or Diploma within three weeks of applying.  Issue within this time depends on you having all of the credits required to complete the qualification on your NZQA ROL.

Why does my ROL differ from the list of standards I have completed with my training provider?

Answer - You should allow up to four weeks for assessment results to be reported to the ITO by your training provider or assessor and for the ITO to forward these results to NZQA for registration on your ROL Also, you might have been assessed by other training providers or assessors and these results may not be held by your current provider.

Why can’t my training provider or assessor assess all of the standards I require?

Answer - Often a training provider or assessor has approval to assess only certain standards.  Discuss the options with the training provider, assessor or ITO Regional Manager.

Who should I contact to get information about how the ITO can help me?

Answer - Contact your nearest ITO Regional Manager. They have all the information you will need to make informed choices and get started.
